Unity Bird Collaborative Art Project

Strengthening community and awareness through art

 

The Unity Bird Project Mission:

· To create an inclusive and representative work in honor of Disability Awareness Day;  inviting all ages and abilities to express and represent themselves.

· Unite and strengthen our community and support the Disability Awareness Day mission via the arts.

· Form an exciting and striking work of art that expresses our richness and diversity as a community.

· Empower participants to share skills and talents.

· Promote awareness by making the disability community, and its supporters, visible.

· Inspire others to think big and to see the power of community. 

 

The Unity Bird Statistics:

· 400+ participants  

· 50+ agencies, groups, and homes

· 700+ hand-feathers

· Each bird has a 21’ wingspan

 

The Unity Bird flight:

A Unity Bird was  “flown” in a procession to the rotunda stage at San Jose City Hall on October 7, 2010.

Our Unity Birds Traveled to Sacramento for the American Art Therapy Association conference the first week of November 2010.

 

 

Instructions

STEP 1:  Registration Form (download yours today)

               Please complete one for your agency/group and/or

               each packet of fabric. Signatures required on back.

STEP 2:  Trace Participant’s hands/wrists (see provided prototype).

                Each cloth is measured to make a certain number of hands.

STEP 3:  Decorate the hands with permanent markers and/or

                art materials of your choice.  Have fun and be creative!  

               Note- the complete birds will be carried and displayed    

                        Outside, so use art materials that are weather

                        resistant and durable.

STEP 4:  (Optional) Document your art making and e-mail photos to

                info@thefriendsofgrace.org

STEP 5:  Drop- Off completed hands, registration, and extra fabric at

                Grace Community Center 484 E San Fernando St., San Jose

           If you are unable to drop off hands please call us for other options

                Deadline is Wednesday September 22nd  or ASAP

STEP 6:  Attend Disability Awareness Day on October 7, 2010

               (see flier and/or visit www.dad.sjdistrict1.com for details)

               Come see and/or help us “fly” the completed large scale

               Unity Birds at noon in our parade at San Jose City Hall!

               Note- We need support to get these large birds to “Fly”

                        There is a space on the registration to sign up for

                        this exciting community opportunity!
